From grassroots racing to Toyota Gazoo Racing
Leeroy Poulter’s motorsport career began in the most grassroots way possible. Growing up in the south, Poulter’s father was involved in regional racing. A small Peewee 50 eventually introduced the young Poulter to motocross. His first race came at a local track where Poulter won the beginner class. That victory sparked a career that would take him through motocross, karting, track racing and rallying. After winning a karting championship, Poulter moved into track racing. His career eventually led him to Nissan before an opportunity opened with Toyota.
Racing at the highest level
Poulter went on to compete at the highest levels of South African motorsport. He highlighted the unique challenges of rallying in the Eastern Cape. High-speed roads demand precision from both driver and co-driver. He also competed in rallying until 2016 before moving into a new chapter. Today, Poulter remains heavily involved with Toyota Gazoo Racing through coaching, track racing and rally development.
Building the next generation
Poulter believes South African rallying needs to grow from the grassroots. He supports the development of more accessible entry-level rally and off-road cars. The aim is to create a pathway for young drivers to progress through motorsport. He believes affordable off-road vehicles could help drivers develop before moving into expensive top-level machinery. Poulter also sees potential for South African-built vehicles to compete internationally.
The future of Toyota Gazoo Racing
The Toyota Gazoo Racing programme is developing a motorsport pathway spanning karting, track racing, rallying and off-road competition. Poulter believes the formula can produce future champions. He also remains open to returning to competition himself. Asked about racing a Toyota Gazoo Racing car again, Poulter made his preference clear. A return to rallying would be high on his list. For now, the focus remains on development and performance. With another rally approaching in Port Elizabeth, Poulter and the team are focused on building momentum. The bigger goal is clear: strengthen South African motorsport and create a pathway towards the international stage.
